Fleet Survey

Post by UAL006 Pat Schoof » June 18th, 2018, 9:40 pm

Pilots,

Please take a minute to fill out a quick survey. It should take you less time than reading this message. Here is the link:

Thanks,

Pat

The survey has now been closed and I have looked through the collected data. I must state up front that due to the sample size and the population of the airline, the findings are not statistically significant.

Interesting facts:
1. Of the newest pilots, 50% are using X-Plance and the rest are split between FS9 and FSX.
2. The fleet of the respondents is about 75% payware.
3. Most respondents choose to fly payware versus freeware.
4. Everyone answered the validation question correctly.

My opinion is that as a VA, we should focus on the following two items:
1. Be an asset to new members pointing them towards available freeware planes to get them started in their piloting in the VA.
2. Highlight payware and payware quality planes for use in the VA.
3. Dedicate a portion of the fleet page to X-Plane.

Just my 2¢...

I know we have FS9 users but a) it's 14-15 years old and b) may be prone to problems with Win10. I think we should limit FS9 support.

X-Plane definitely deserves support even though I'm not using it. Perhaps we should have an VP - XP-Fleet and a VP - FSX/P3D fleet to balance the load.

P3D is a wrinkle because what works in FSX will often work in 32-bit P3DV3 but not in 64-bit P3DV4. As Jerry noted above, there isn't the volume of freeware coming out like before, especially for P3DV4. Understandably so.

It's FS9. It never needs support. It runs - and looks - better then all the other sims combined. Cartoon graphics here we come.
Maybe we should limit support for FSuX/P3Dud and Crap-Plane. Or remove them altogether. Free up forum space here.

I'm still buying new scenery for FS9 and beta testing new aircraft for FS9. One day those other sims will catch up. Maybe. 8-)

I think the pejorative slurs toward sims you don't use is uncalled for, Jonathan.

I stated an opinion based on the onerous task of having a volunteer fleet manager having to source and test freeware and payware for many sims. My suggestion that we limit support for FS9 was based on having seen reports of it having a difficult time working on Win10, and several scenery and aircraft developers withdrawing support for the older platforms.
